WHSO Music Director and Symphony Orchestra Conductor
The West Hartford Symphony Orchestra (WHSO) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization serving West Hartford Connecticut. Founded in 2001, WHSO is a non-profit, semi-professional, volunteer-based organization whose purpose is to bring together amateur and professional musicians dedicated to improving the quality of life for the Greater West Hartford community by performing and enjoying orchestral music. In addition to artistic expression, commitments to inspire, engage, and recruit young local musicians to join the orchestra and appreciate orchestral music are fundamental to the organization’s purpose.
POSITION TITLE: Music Director and Symphony Orchestra Conductor
REPORTS TO: President of the Board
ACTIVITIES: Wednesday night rehearsals during September through May, all symphony performances, participation in board meetings, participation in community events such as Celebrate West Hartford
TERMS OF COMPENSATION: The Director/Conductor is an independent contractor and there is a contract that specifies duties and terms of compensation. In-person attendance at rehearsals and performances and Board meetings is required but all other activities are completed in a place, time and manner at the discretion of the Director/Conductor.
FINANCIAL COMPENSATION: Starting at $15,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in conducting, music education, or related field

Prior experience in orchestral conducting, working with advanced and student musicians, and staff management

Ability to work collaboratively with WHSO volunteer musicians, officials and board members and the community in West Hartford and surrounding areas
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Advanced degree(s) in conducting, music education, or related field

Established connections with other music educators in the Hartford County area
DUTIES:
-
Guide WHSO’s artistic direction and the artistic development of our musicians.

Conduct WHSO’s Symphony Orchestra.

In consultation with the musicians, select appropriate repertoire for concerts, ensuring the effective use of all orchestra musicians.

Recruit and select guest musicians.

Spearhead the effort to recruit new volunteer musicians.

Oversee the audition and placement process.

Foster a welcoming environment while maintaining a focus on musical excellence

Assist with fundraising efforts and service projects

Leadership/participation in West Hartford cultural and community events as necessary

Engaged participation in WHSO fund-raising and grant application initiatives.

Establish and maintain relationships with professional arts organizations, local private music teachers, and appropriate staff in surrounding school districts.
